Classic Australian Short Stories & Verse by Maggie Pinkney (ed).
Two men, above all others, helped to forge our sense of national identity. They were Henry Lawson, with his moving short stories of battlers in the backblocks, and A. B. ('Banjo') Paterson, with his stirring bush ballads.
This nostalgic anthology includes the best works of both men - including Lawson's classic 'The Drover's Wife' and 'Water Them Geraniums' and Paterson's 'The Man from Snowy River', 'Clancy of the Overflow', 'The Geebung Polo Club' and, of course, 'Waltzing Matilda'.
Also included among the short stories are some of Steele Rudd's much-loved 'Dad and Dave' yarns, Edward Dyson's haunting 'The Conquering Bush' and Barbara Baynton's horrifying 'The Chosen Vessel'.
C. J. Dennis, Dorothea Mackellar, Barcroft Boake and, of course, Paterson and Lawson are among the many poets included in the anthology of verse - as well as many rollicking ballads describing the suffering of the convicts and the exploits of the bushrangers, written by long-forgotten versifiers.
Every Australian should read this superb anthology.
