Australian Cricket: The Turbulent Years (1893-1917) by Jack Pollard

The Turbulent Years - the second book in Jack Pollard's five-volume history of Australian cricket, takes the story from 1893 to 1917, the period known as Cricket's Golden Age. On the field some of the most exciting matches ever were played out between Australian and English teams of great skill and character. The sportsmanship of the participants and their ethical approach to crises helped make cricket a game apart, with players like Victor Trumper, Clem Hill, Joe Darling, Hugh Trumple and Monty Noble producing glittering performances.

Off the field, however, the period was the most turbulent in Australia's cricket history. There was undisguised acrimony, verbal and even physical challenges, as star players struggled against attempts of newly-elected officials to take charge of their team selections and control of touring teams' finances. After years of argument, the Australian Board of Controll took charge, but  at a high cost to players who had become financially secure from the early British tours. Like the other volumes in the set, The Turbulent Years is as eventful as it is entertaining.
